The next time you’re batting away from indoor cricket nets, make sure you’re confident in your footwork and are well able to get down the wicket so you can beat spin bowlers with ease and really make a difference to the scoreboard.

A common fault among players is shutting their eyes, running down the wicket and trying their best to hit the ball out of the park – a method of play that means it’s rather easy to miss the ball altogether and either get stumped, caught or bowled out. Not the best strategy, we’re sure you’ll agree.

What you want to do is put pressure on the spinner and turn his bowls into a ball you can easily score from. By picking up a single in this way you show the bowler that you’re fully in control of the situation and, even better, that he has no weapon in his arsenal that will see you panic.

In order to do this successfully, you have to come down the wicket in a balanced but quick way so you can decide whether to defend or attack the ball.

As with anything, you need to practice this skill in order to become competent as a player so focus on this in the cricket nets in the future. Try to only hit the ball on the ground – this will help you gain a better understanding of which balls are close enough to opt for an attack.

You’ll certainly make mistakes so don’t expect to be perfect the first time you give it a go but you should find that you improve quite quickly and are better able to go into a match situation with great skill and confidence.
