England batsman Jonathan Trott has retired. Twitter has reacted appropriately.

Cricket scoreboards will never be the same again – England batsman Jonathan Trott, who scored an impressive 3,835 runs in 52 Tests, has announced his retirement from international cricket, saying that he no longer believes his game is up to England level.

The 34-year-old returned to Test cricket to tour the West Indies after leaving the Ashes tour citing stress, but he succeeded in only making 72 runs in six innings.

“I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me and given me the chance to represent England and to thank supporters for all their backing over the years. I’ve had incredible highs and some real lows but wouldn’t change a thing,” he said.

The right-hander also scored a century in his debut back in 2009 during the Ashes, going on to play in two more Ashes campaigns and eventually being named International Cricket Council player of the year back in 2011.

Alastair Cook, England Test captain, commented on the news, saying that “Trotty” will be sorely missed by everyone involved in England cricket, as well as all the team’s supporters.

The cricket world reacted to the news on social media, with Paul Collingwood noting that Trott had left his mark on every test pitch in the world and Matt Prior congratulating him on what has been a fantastic career. James Anderson said how emotional it was to hear the news, while Mark Ramprakash wished him all the best for his future.
