With winter fast approaching, it can be all too easy to close the curtains, sit on the sofa and flick on the TV, but just because it’s cold outside, there’s no excuse for not staying active.

That’s why we’ve put together tips on how to keep enjoying sport during the winter months, whether you play on artificial surfaces or wrap up warm.

  • Find pitches with artificial surfaces

There’s nothing worse than playing sport on a cold, wet afternoon only to come home caked in mud. That’s why it’s wise to find a pitch that has artificial surfaces instead of grass.

This enables players to keep motivated and excited about the game, as they can play as well as they do during the summer, stay clean and avoid injury.

Slipping around on a muddy pitch can cause you to fall over, resulting in common sports ailments such as twisted ankles. However, with synthetic grass, you won’t have to worry about sliding around on slippery or muddy grass.

  • Wear the right clothes

If you’re going to be playing outside, it’s important to wrap up warm. But with sports clothes, you also need layers that allow your skin to breathe and sweat.

The trick is to wear thermal base layer trousers or shorts and a long-sleeved top under your sports kit. This helps keep you warm while taking the sweat away from your skin. These tight garments will reduce drafts to the body and protect organs from chilly weather.

You can also get thermal hats and gloves for really cold days, which will help keep extremities warm as most heat is lost from the body through your hands and head. It’s a good idea to have a change of clothes ready for immediately after the game so you can warm up as quickly as possible.

  • Have warm food and drink before playing

By sipping on a warm tea or having a bowl of steaming porridge in the morning, your body is able to stay warmer for longer. You could bring a flask of warm drinks or soup to the game to have afterwards to heat you up as well.
